MLS Match 1

Portland Timbers v Colorado Rapids
Dicks Sporting Goods Park
March 19, 2011 6:00pm

Television: Fox Sports Northwest/Root Sports and Fox Soccer Channel
Radio: English KXL 750 and in Spanish on La Pantera 940

The long wait is now over, your Portland Timbers are hitting the pitch in their first official MLS match. Epic, really doesn’t cover the half of it. A lot of people have worked very hard to put the Timbers in MLS and for that we are very thankful. The media coverage has exploded and excitement will only grow as the 2011 campaign marches on.

Today is a 15 year dream come true. Back in 1996 when MLS first kicked off, I wished that Portland would someday have a MLS team.   Little did I know then that we would build upon our roots to the point where we are today.  Today is another great day in the history of our Club and the Rose City.  I regret not going to Denver, but I know an Army will represent. I will be watching our boys in HD drinking pitchers of Rubinator and be as happy as a football obsessed man can be.  Yesterday, Today and Forever.  Rose City Til I Die.

Kevin’s breakdown:
Portland’s MLS debut is finally here, but what will it take for the Timbers to get three-points on the road agains the defending MLS Cup champs the Colorado Rapids? Along with one of the stingiest defenses in the league and a variety of attacking options, the Rapids will be playing inspired soccer in their home-opener at Dick Sporting Goods Park. The champs will probably have a chip on their shoulder on Saturday as well, perhaps feeling the motivation from the many critics who’ve written off their championship run as a Cinderella-story anomaly, and this won’t makes things any easier for Portland.

Certainly, opening day jitters will be amplified for Portland, as the players are well aware of the anticipation and attention that’s buzzing through the city. Perhaps, it’s a benefit in some ways that the team is starting the first few games of their debut MLS season away from home…on second thought, probably not. Either way, it would be an incredible accomplishment if this newly assembled club can find success early on.

Defensively, the Timbers should be solid, as they’ve shown a determined and aggressive attitude in the preseason. However, the potential loss of starting keeper Troy Perkins could throw a wrench into everything. After practice on Thursday, head coach John Spencer said Perkins is 50/50 for the opener. But who will score goals? Offensively, the Timbers will need their forwards to finish and place shots on frame, but a lot will depend on if the midfield can consistently create chances and openings. The big issue for the Portland will be keeping possession and making sure they outwork they’re opponents by utilizing their speed, but at the same time, play smart and efficient soccer. Simple, right? One things for sure, we’ll know a whole lot more about the 2011 Portland Timbers after Saturday’s match.
