Oregon Historical Society: Soccer City, USA

The Oregon Historical Society will open anew exhibit on Friday dedicated to the Portland Timbers NASL years. The titled of the exhibit is Soccer City, USA: The Portland Timbers and the NASL Years, 1975-1982.

Over a year ago, exhibit curators Michael Orr and Morgen Young started FC Media as a way to collect the history of this popular team. Trying to locate a full collection of the Timbers’ historic uniforms, FC Media discovered that no such museum or archive dedicated to the Timbers existed. This realization sent the avid soccer fans on a quest to collect uniforms, photographs, and oral histories from both players and fans, which will now be displayed in this original Oregon History Museum exhibit.

Kick Magazine May 1, 1976

This is a scanned copy of Kick Magazine from May 1, 1976 in which the Timbers played the St. Louis Stars at Civic Stadium.  Kick was the official magazine of the NASL. There are some great shots of the old Timbers playing and of the supporters at the stadium. I love the shot of kids putting up a Soccer City USA sign in the park (tifo). An advertisement from Trimet advises people to take the bus to the stadium to avoid the hassle of traffic and parking. Some things never change. Enjoy.… Read the rest

Kick Magazine from July 8, 1975

I scanned an entire issue of a 1975 Kick magazine. Kick was the official magazine of the North American Soccer League and I believe it served as game day program. This issue is dated July 8, 1975 for a match between your Portland Timbers vs Los Angeles Aztecs at Civic Stadium. Enjoy!

Gavin Wilkinson – The 36 year old will be out there showing everyone that he’s still got a bit of the old glory in him. Hopefully, some his players will get a chance to see their coach in action. After all, we ARE talking about a former Perth Glory Most Glorious Player Award winner.

John Bain – Played for the NASL Timbers from 1978-82 and lead the Timbers in scoring with 45 goals in 148 matches. He returned to Portland as player/coach for the 89′ & 90′ seasons.
