Well with a 0-2 record the Timbers rest at the bottom of the rankings. The win against Chivas will hopefully help the team get a a solid result against New England on Saturday. This Saturday’s match is the last chnace for the Timbers to get points before their home opener on April 14th.

Power rankings don’t mean much, but they are an interesting way to look at what others are saying about our club. With only one MLS game in the books and a poor first half against Colorado we are being ranked right near the bottom. The only team to rank worse than us overall is this Saturday’s opponent Toronto FC.

#1 Rochester Rhinos (1.79 points per game, previously #7) They have a busy July, giving them a chance to catch Austin in the standings, including today’s match.
#2 Vancouver Whitecaps FC (1.63 points per game, previously #4) Big victories over Austin and Montreal, need Nash to keep the offense going
#3 Austin Aztex (2.07 points per game, previously #1) Couldn’t put them at #1 after loss to Vancouver and only beating up on the terrible Blues in June.
#4 Carolina RailHawks (1.50 points per game, previously #5) July will be tough for them with away games against Puerto Rico, Montreal and Rochester.

#5 Portland Timbers (1.33 points per game, previously #9) Topsy turvy season is heading in the right direction at the moment, will points and goals leader Ryan Pore get involved again?

#6 Montreal Impact (1.21 points per game, previously #3) Losing to upper tier teams Vancouver… Read the rest

#1 Portland Timbers (2-0-1)  Barely get the nod over Vancouver with a more impressive showing against St. Louis, and a tie at Saputo
#2 Vancouver Whitecaps (2-0-1)  Will have a chance to settle the score with Portland on Thursday
#3 Puerto Rico Islanders (2-0-0)  Lost some key players, but are off to a good start
#4 Austin Aztex (2-1-0) Had a big home win over last year’s champion Montreal as well as St. Louis
#5 NSC Minnesota (2-2-0)  Surprising start for expansion team from same city as last year’s bottom-dwelling Thunder.  Still not ready to be in the leagues elite, with losses on road to Vancouver and Puerto Rico

#6 Rochester Rhinos (1-1-1) Almost pulled off a tie against Portland, and had big road win against Austin
#7 Montreal Impact (0-1-1)  Slow starting impact running on cruise control this part of the season.

I will never understand why the MLS gives 6 of 16 teams a bye week in Week 2. I have decided that a team not playing will not move up or down in the rankings – even though a case could be made for LA to be number one and that DC United be dead last. All 16 are back in action next week – so there should be dramatic changes next time. MLS Power Rankings written by our East Coast Corespondent Max.
