Player Performance Index: How did your Timbers Rate?

Castrol (lube company owned by BP) sponsors a player performance index that has been used by some of the top leagues in Europe for the past few years and now has come to MLS. They use all kinds of high tech stuff to rate every player’s performance in every match and give you a simple number to judge for yourself (read an FAQ of how they decide on MLSSoccer.com). Thierry Henry tops the list, followed by two players we won’t see for the rest of the season Steve Zakuani and David Ferreira. The Timbers top man is Rodney Wallace who comes in at 22. Kenny Cooper Takes Pressure In Stride

The Timbers faithful was a buzz this morning and for good reason, as the Timbers held a press conference to officially introduce forward Kenny Cooper today at the Adidas Headquarters. The 26-year old Cooper will likely be the most accomplished player on the roster as the team enters into their first MLS season in March, carrying with him a well-rounded and impressive resume’ even at a relatively young age and it’s likely he’ll become one of the faces of this franchise.

Zac Macmath

Age: 19

Position: Goalkeeper

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 176

School: University of Maryland

Dropping Timbers Take: In a draft class considered to be filled with talented keepers, MacMath seems to have crept ahead of the bunch. A starter with the U-20 squad, MacMath has all the physical tools to be a great keeper down the road – size, length, quick reactions, and quality awareness. His experience with the U-20 National team helps his stock a lot, and he trained with Tim Howard at Everton last August. I’d expect him to be drafted in the first round, likely as the first goalkeeper taken.

What others are Saying:

“Top-flight goalkeeper is a U.S. Under-20 starter and best goalkeeper available.” – Soccer by Ives

“The Union will solve their goalkeeping woes by selecting the best keeper in a deep class.” – International Soccer Network

Geoffery C. Arnold from Oregon Live reports that Nimo wants to play in Portland, and the options the Timbers have to acquire him.

“Portland is the only MLS team I want to play with. I can’t really play with another team in MLS,” Nimo said. “I’m young and I’d rather stay in Portland and play. This is where I’m from and I’d enjoy my career. If I go play in another city, I won’t want to play and I’d quit.”

Ryan Pore the Man with the Golden Boot

Ryan Pore has had a stellar 2010, winning the Division 2 title for most goals (15) and overall points leader (35). Pore started the season red hot scoring 6 goals in the first four games of the season. While the hot scoring streak slowed a little, time and time again he put the ball in the back of the net. Some of those goals did come from penalty kicks, but it was Ryan who could be counted on to hit those pks during the regular season.
