Down the Byline is an excellent KC blog and writes about tonight’s match up.
Key Match Up – Roger Espinoza vs Jack Jewsbury – Espinoza needs to keep his attitude in check enough to keep himself from getting a needless red card, but needs to keep the fire that has basically made him the team’s best player in the two and a half games he played before his red card against RSL. This is going to be especially true closer to goal where Jewsbury has done plenty of damage this year on free kicks.

When: At the end of the national anthem let your streamers fly!

The Timbers will play their first rematch of the season when they host Colorado Rapids on Saturday. The first meeting with Colorado did not go well, but it was still a grand party as we made our MLS debut. Now it is time for payback as we face a squad with a MLS-record six consecutive draws. Colorado started the season hot winning their first three games with a plus 7 goal differential, after that they would lose the next three matches with a minus 5 goal differential. Now Colorado is in a draw streak and have a big question mark on their back. Futty is calling this match a “must win,” well I won’t call it that but I love the attitude.

Philly Union Manager Peter Nowak had this to say about his preparation for the match (via MLS official site):
“I’m worried about the pitch because it’s a little bit too small, and when you watch games when they play at home, it’s like pinball,” Nowak said. “You’ve got to figure out a good plan for that, which is why we trained [at YSC]. We had a couple of good days here adjusting to the turf because it’s completely different.”
…
When asked about Portland tactically, the Union manager specifically mentioned defender Rodney Wallace, midfielders Kalif Alhassan and Jeremy Hall and forwards Kenny Cooper and Jorge Perlaza as players Philly need to contain if they wish to escape with three points.“They have speed,” Nowak said. “And as I said about the field, we need to go there and find what is really good distance for spacing, so we can

FC Dallas does their match preview in a 5 minute video which breaks down the key matchups and lists the three keys to Dallas’ success.
Their keys to Dallas winning the match are:
- Creating wide isolation
- Penetrating runs
- Bright start
The Timbers official site has a MatchDay Preview, as well as John Strong‘s notes on how to stop MLS MVP David Ferreira:
The easiest way, theoretically, is to make sure that he’s tightly marked at all times, especially when receiving the ball. If he’s not given time and space to pick out a pass, he obviously becomes less effective. Also of crucial importance is making sure his teammates who are all immediately making runs off the ball when Ferreira’s in possession, are being covered.

The end of the regular season is here, the Timbers play their last regular season division 2 match in Vancouver today. Vancouver is a fitting spot for this match, as they will also be making the move to MLS next year. At times it was tough to be positive about the Timbers, when in early Summer the team had trouble winning games, but that is long over as the Timbers ride a 9 game winning streak going into today’s match. Let’s hope that we put that streak into double digits tonight.
