The Wild Card Pack: The MLS Numbers

12 September 2011 1,436 views 2 Comments

A pack of six teams stands right in the middle of the wild card race, fighting for the last three playoff spots (two of which are wild card spots).  Separated by a mere five points, Philadelphia heads the pack at 36, and Chivas’ 31 has them hanging on at the bottom.  Portland is in the middle with 33 points and arguably the easiest remaining schedule.

By three spots you mean one Eastern Conference spot and two wild card spots, right?

Houston is least able to dictate opponents’ points, as they only have one “pack” opponent left.

Yeah, I didn’t word that very well.

It’s also more complex than this because one of the teams above Philly could drop down, and there are even a few teams below Chivas that still have a mathematical shot. But these teams are all tightly bunched around the Timbers and are most likely the ones Portland will be fighting against.

With five home games remaining (and being in the East) DC should almost be a lock, but they do have some injury problems with Pontius now out.
