Your Portland Timbers will play host to one of the world’s great clubs Ajax Amsterdam in an international friendly match this Wednesday. It will be the first international friendly for newly renovated Jeld Wen Field and it is fitting that the top quality Ajax will be our opponent.
Historically Ajax is one of Europe’s most successful clubs and just recently was crowned the 2011 champion of top
flight Dutch football league Eredivisie. Ajax won a hat-trick of European Cups from 1971-73 and most recently won the Champions League in 1995. There is a long list of legends that have played for the club including Marco van Basten, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert, Clarence Seedorf, Michael Laudrup and Johan Cruyff just to name a few. Ajax’s youth program is considered amongst the world’s elite in developing young talent such as Inter’s Wesley Sneijder and Hotspur’s Rafael van der Vaart. Ajax traces it roots back to 1883 and today is Holland’s dominate club with 30 league titles.
Ajax started their US tour on May19thwith a visit to the White House. They played their first of two US matches last Sunday when they defeated DC United 2-1 (video highlights below). Ajax played many of their top players in the friendly and hopefully we will get to see much of the same when they visit PDX. The club is sponsored by Adidas and will be visiting the headquarters during their stay.

Ajax plays their home matches in the impressive Amsterdam ArenA built in 1996. The stadium holds 56,000 and features a retractable roof. They also love their tifo.
