Timbers Expansion Day Trades
The draft is over and the Timbers are wheeling and dealing. The big one right now is Dax McCarty is out and Rodney Wallace is in. The reasoning behind this one is the Timbers have scouted an overseas central midfielder who Gavin Wilkinson sees as “the perfect fit”.
- Dax McCarty and Allocation Money traded to DC United for Rodney Wallace and fourth-round draft pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft
- Anthony Wallace traded back to Colorado for Allocation Money
- Arturo Alvarez traded to Real Salt Lake for a second round SuperDraft Pick
It seems pretty clear that the Timbers are trading away experienced players for assets and picks. They have a plan to grow through youth and field a team based on signings outside the expansion draft.
Dropping Timber user Kejsare puts a positive spin on things:
I’m very certain we’re going after defenders with MLS potential and then load up on the top end with more prize players. Defenders are cheap, but the winning combo up top is not.
Another DT visitor Dgard is concerned:
But there also remains the possibility that all of these closed curtain dealings backfire and Portland is left with a plan that has blown up in their faces. I just feel that there is so much we missed out on in this draft, and that one of the shinning pieces we DID have, we gave away for a player I didn’t even know about till this afternoon.
What are you thinking right now? It’s definitely a topsy turvy day and we don’t have any indication that the trades are done.
Update:
Spencer is asking for patience from concerned fans. They seem extremely confident about this central midfielder who is “dynamic” and a “perfect fit”. It’s also being conjectured that this could possibly even be a DP signing. The strategy at this point is apparently to stockpile players in the back line and “invest” in the front. That wording may hint at a possible DP or at least a big name for the mysterious midfielder.
