The biggest rivalry in American soccer will continue Wednesday evening at PGE Park as the USSF Division-2 Portland Timbers will play host to Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders in the 3rd round of the U.S. Open Cup tournament. An annual competition essentially open to all levels of American soccer, throughout the season thirty-two teams will qualify and partake in the single elimination tournament in order to crown U.S. soccer’s official national champion. In the last month, Portland has defeated Kitsap and Sonoma County (both teams from lower divisions of professional soccer), to reach the 3rd round and earn a shot against Seattle, who is one of 8 MLS teams in tournament.

Portland Timbers

VS
Tampa Bay Rowdies

Sunday, June 27th

5pm @ PGE Park
Televised on Fox Sports Northwest
Online @ PortlandTimbers.com

Radio on 95.5 The Game

The Timbers return to league action, hosting the Tampa bay Rowdies for the first time since 1982, in which we won 5 nil. The Rowdies have had a successful inaugural season thus far, sitting in 5th place in total points. The Timbers are coming off their first two win streak since the beginning of the season, the last two wins we have scored 6 goals and only allowed one to be scored against us.

Where the Timbers had a rough May, the Rowdies went undefeated. June has not been so kind to the Rowdies, they have lost their last three league games and lost this past week in US Open Cup play against… Read the rest

The faithful will have to wait another four years to even have a chance to see our USA team play in the World Cup. The Algeria game was a super high, after 91 minutes of heartbreak, we were saved, today after 120 minutes we are broken. Forced to drink and think about those damn Rowdies and then the tainted meat of flounder. At this point, a couple of Timber victories here can erase the thoughts of what could have been for the US.

As, the ads say the US is respected, but respect is not enough, we proved that we are a team on the world stage, 6 straight WC appearances after a 40 year drought is something to be proud of. Now the focus is on to build the next squad of men who can take the US to the next level. 2014 and 2022 sounds millions of miles… Read the rest

The Timbers front office announced some tweaks to the MLS logo that was unveiled June 12th. The Timber’s Army and the 107ist in particular, worked with the front office to come to a design that we can call an improvement. The new logo removes the NHL shading, and some unnecessary lines as you can see above. The debate will continue.

The situation in AC St. Louis looks finally stable, weeks after they folded their sister operation St. Louis Athletica, a WPS team, there were question marks surrounding the financial situation in STL, and fears that the club would fold before finishing its first season. But guess who stepped in with some cash, Jeff Cooper, duh and now guess who packed their bags and was sent home, head coach Claude Anelka, duh. Claude, is the brother of Chelsea star Nicolas Anelka, who was also sent home packing from the French team, only to watch his national team implode only like only the French can.
Well the conditions in STL look much better, after weeks of mystery of what would happen to the club. They beat NSC Minnesota in the 2nd round of the US Open Cup and will head to LA this week to face the Galaxy. The AC St. Louis… Read the rest

What a great 12 hours it was as Portland kicked off in Bremerton and got an impressive result against the Kitsap Pumas, to set up what we all were hoping for a battle against seattle in our house. The Timbers played some great football yesterday and made us all proud. Ross Smith has show prowess in the air, and used it to full effect to start the Timbers up. Then Dike had his coming out party and lit up Kitsap for the hat trick. This is now two wins in a row for the Timbers, something they have not done since the first two games of the season.

Fresh off a sweet smokey Timber victory, the US kicked off their fate and just when it was starting to feel hopeless, they brought the ruckus! Footie fans, or should I say USA fans you shall not forget where you were at… Read the rest
